We’re looking for a Controller to evolve our Finance & Accounting department through ownership of the Accounting function including payment processing, journal entries, tax and financial audit assistance, and reporting, among other things. This is one of the first internal roles in the data.world Finance and Accounting department, so there will be lots of room to establish systems and processes, and get exposure to a wide variety of startup SaaS business functions. The work completed will be core to supporting our company in our next phase of fast-paced growth, and this person will be responsible for building a best in class team as the organization scales.

This role requires a solid understanding of key technical financial accounting concepts and is geared towards a self-starter who is excited about building out the function while also being able to roll up the sleeves to “do the work”. We’re looking for someone who is able to effectively communicate and collaborate with others, take ownership of the accounting function, and is passionate about finding the most efficient way to execute on priorities.

At data.world, you will:

  • Own the accounting function from end-to-end – from day-to-day bookkeeping to month end close and financial statement preparation
  • Scale the function through rapid growth, including hiring, training, managing, and growing accounting team members
  • Manage all essential accounting functions such as the Order to Cash and Procure to Pay processes
  • Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, during month-end close
  • Develop and maintain documentation (narratives, flow charts) surrounding our current business processes and controls
  • Manage all accounting system and lead future ERP migration
  • Manage all financial aspects of our international expansion efforts
  • Work closely with our accounting firm - both the audit and tax side as we go through the annual financial statement audit and relevant tax filings.
  • Collaborate with Legal & HR on areas requiring coordination around employment taxes, state taxes, and areas where we have state nexus
  • Ad-hoc financial analysis and reports

We’d love to see:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • “Big 4” accounting firm experience
  • 10+ years of experience in accounting, finance, or related consulting fields
  • Proven track record of building and scaling the accounting function
  • Experience hiring and building an effective accounting team through growth
  • International expansion experience, overseeing global accounting operations, and providing guidance as the company opens in new areas
  • Comfort working in both G Suite and the Microsoft Suite, with particularly strong skills in Excel worksheets
  • Thorough understanding and application of GAAP financial statements and reporting
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience interfacing effectively with cross functional roles internally and externally from the company
  • Good communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain concepts in a clear, concise, and compelling way up to the board level
  • An appetite to try new things -- you’re curious and excited to improve your process, and always looking to learn
